Cherokee Leaf Printing

November 11, 2008

Cherokee leaf printing is a way to design your own fall fabric with materials found in your yard.

Supplies needed are:

fresh leaves of any color

a hammer

cotton fabric/muslin

masking tape

Gather the leaves close to the time that you are going to use them so they don’t dry out.  Cover a piece of smooth flat wood with some paper towels or another cloth.  Lay the leaves on the back of the muslin and cover with masking tape to hold them in place.

Turn the fabric over and hammer where the leaf is taking care to catch all of the edges.  This allows the leaf pigments to stain onto the fabric.

Try a variety of leaves and flowers.

And if it’s too late for fall leaves where you live, get a head start on Christmas using pine needles to make a custom Christmas tree printed fabric.

Once the fabric is “printed”, set the colors by soaking the fabric in 1 cup of salt to 2 gallons of water.
